Our Work Studies HSC Teacher, Mrs Atherton, explains why she loves teaching secondary students and introduces Summerland's latest HSC subject on offer, Work Studies.

We've also included a profile on Mrs Atherton's diverse career and teaching approach!

'I love teaching Work Studies because this subject helps students discover different pathways to learning and employment. I love the practical components of this course which suit many students’ learning styles. I am excited to be introducing this subject at Summerland because it was great to see students engaging in this course at my previous school. I look forward to seeing students flourish in 2017.'

Teacher Profile

Name: Michelle Atherton.

Title/Subject Area: Work Studies.

Career Background: I am honoured to have an extremely varied work background. Cutting blueberry pickings, preparing documents for state parliament and being an employment advisor are just some of the roles I have filled. Whilst I have found fulfillment and enjoyed most of the work I have done, I believe God has allowed me to have such a diverse background “for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14).

My Teaching Approach/Style: “Without a vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18) so I pray that, through the subjects I teach, each student will be given hope and be encouraged to be and do the very best they can. I want them to develop the intrinsic love of discovery and learning I believe we are all born with. My hope is that they will develop a passion to discover who they were created to be. I love seeing students’ eyes widen and light up when they excitedly tell me that they finally understand a concept, or have gained a new skill.

I Love: As a mother, I love the extra support I see teachers giving my child. As a teacher, I love the genuineness and eagerness of students. They are truly incredible and delightful humans. Summerland is a great place to learn.
