Mr Wyatt’s love of Science and thought provoking teaching approach create a great environment for Senior Students to succeed!

"Chemistry is elegant and complex, theoretical and hands on. To me, it is the study of how things work and gives a glimpse into how fantastically creative our Creator truly is. Studying chemistry provides deep understanding of the processes going on around us, the properties of substances and how they interact with one another; from radioactive decay to baking a cake! It’s a topic that encourages students to ask questions and enables them to discover the answers: “What happens when...?”, “What if we changed this...?”, “Where could this be applied...?” It’s relevant, interesting and exciting. I love it!"

Below, we’ve included a profile on Mr Wyatt’s career and teaching style.

Name: Matthew Wyatt

Title/Subject: Science – HSC Chemistry

Career background: Before pursuing a career as a science teacher I spent five years as a lab technician, performing chemical and physical tests on construction materials. This role sparked in me the love of science I have today. During this time, I was also involved in youth ministry/leadership and discovered that sowing into the lives of young people was incredibly important to me and a calling that God had put on my life. These two coupled together pointed a clear path towards teaching - so I entered University. During study, I also worked as a residential care youth worker and as a liaison and support officer for international university students. I have worked in a variety of schools in the region in both teaching and group mentoring roles.

My teaching approach/style: For some time now, I’ve held two convictions regarding learning and teaching: intelligence isn’t a measure of how much you know, it’s how willing you are to learn; and knowledge comes from more than having an idea, you need to apply it. My personal goal as a teacher is inspiring an attitude of innovation. I love encouraging kids to use their minds and what they’ve learnt to find new solutions and create new things - to understand that they are each unique and, as such, their own ideas have merit and can contribute something new. I regard that my role in this is providing all of the framework; facilitating a structured and monitored learning environment, presenting the learning material and then empowering the students to use what they have gained to push even further forward.

I love: As a parent and a teacher at Summerland, I am still often wonderfully stunned by the Christian community that this school fosters. I admire how much the staff genuinely care for the students, working together, putting in so much time and effort to help students achieve their best. I feel privileged and honoured to be welcomed as a part of this team.

Favourite Quote: “...in life it is often the tiny details that end up being the most important.” - Lemony Snicket (aka Daniel Handler)
