Kindy Wombats Teacher, Miss Smith, explains why she loves teaching Kindy, why transitioning to Kindy is so important, including a profile on her career and teaching approach.

'It is such a joy to teach kindergarten students as it’s their first encounter with formal schooling. At this age they have this infectious passion and enthusiasm for learning and school life. They love to have fun and particularly enjoy it when music, movement and creativity are a part of lessons. This is fun for the teacher too! They so freely encourage and love others and have such a receptive attitude. It’s a privilege to be apart of creating a nurturing atmosphere that can set them up with a positive attitude to learning and success at school. The Trindy program sets up kids entering Kindergarten for success in so many ways. They are introduced to many aspects of school life, like the school evnvironment, events, routines and teachers. This smoothly transitions them into to school life. It also prepares them academically and socially which is fantastic. I am always impressed with the wealth of knowledge these children come into Kindergarten with.'

PROFILE

Name: Miss Smith
Title: Kindergarten Teacher / Infants Sport Co-Ordinator
Career background: I gained valuable experience teaching in a range of schools in the area before helping to pioneer & set up the Transition to Kindy Program here at Summerland. Through having taught in that role for three years, it has given me valuable insights into how to support them best in their first year of school.
My teaching approach/style: It’s my privilege to provide students with a welcoming classroom environment & nurturing atmosphere. In my teaching I focus on speaking positive, encouraging words; knowing each individual student and how they are unique.
I love: I loved the sense of community at Summerland when I was a high school student here & how much the teachers cared about us. Coming back years later as a teacher it has been inspiring to see how much my fellow colleagues continue to invest into their students & our school.
For fun...Teacher inspiration: ‘Ms Honey’ from ‘Matilda’ by Roald Dahl.
