On Thursday November 3rd, four students from Summerland Christian College visited Southern Cross University to attend the Years 7 and 8 AIME Day (AIME stands for Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience).

‘AIME is a dynamic educational program that is proven to support Indigenous students through high school and into university, employment or further education at the same rate as all Australian students. AIME gives Indigenous students the skills, opportunities, belief and confidence to grow and succeed.’ (AIME website)

At Summerland, it is important to us that every student is given the opportunity to succeed. We believe that each and every student has been given individual gifts and talents that, when nurtured and fed, will grow into something very special. The AIME program is one way that will help us work with and support our Indigenous students. Together, we hope to help them become all that they can be.

We had a fantastic day which focused specifically on Maths and Science, and the importance and relevance of these two areas of study. Whilst most of the students found these segments a little boring, irrelevant or even a bit difficult, one of the mentors reminded them that ‘success isn’t determined by one’s intelligence’ - a great message for us all. One of the highlights of the day was the free Subway lunch!

Next year, there will be five AIME days at the University and we plan to attend all of them, ready to be challenged and inspired!
